Endocscopic Ultrasound

Endoscopic ultrasound is a specialized procedure that utilizes a flexible endoscope equipped with an ultrasound transducer to evaluate the gastrointestinal tract. One of its primary functions is to provide information on tumor staging. There are many other indications for the use of EUS; in general, this modality allows the gastroenterologists to obtain information about the wall of the intestine and structures adjacent to the intestine.

EUS is performed much like other endoscopic procedures. A flexible scope is introduced into the body by mouth or by the rectum depending on the indication. It is an outpatient procedure that usually requires sedation. .
