Dr. Benage earned his B.A. in Biology, with honors, from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1980. He completed his medical school training at the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1984. He subsequently completed his Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in 1987. He then completed his Gastroenterology/Hepatology Fellowship at Indiana University Medical Center in 1989.

In practice for 16 years, he has served as the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterolgy at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, and Medical Director of the GI Laboratory at St. John's since 1996.

Dr. Benage is a member of the America Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Benage is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
